Day 1 – Christchurch

Our first day in New Zealand was mostly spent on travelling. We arrived in from Sydney at around 15:00, and once we’d gotten through immigration and baggage reclaim, it was about 16:30 ish that we arrived at our hotel in the centre of Christchurch.

The first thing that strikes you as you walk around the centre of Christchurch is that the earthquake in 2011 did a LOT of damage to the city.

One of the biggest casualties, in terms of building losses, was Christchurch cathedral, pictured above. Whilst not totally destroyed, the uniqueness of the building makes it very difficult to rebuild. I couldn’t see what the plans or the timescales for rebuilding the cathedral were, but I hope they manage to do something soon. I would be a tragedy to lose a building as striking as Christchurch cathedral.

However, it’s great to see that other parts of the city are being rebuilt, or renovated, as part of Christchurch’s program of rebuilding work.
