The drive from Queenstown to Wanaka has been our shortest journey to date. Driving here was easy, and took us via some very large vineyards. I do mean VERY large vineyards!
We also stopped off to see Roaring Meg, which is part of a very impressive hydro-electric power scheme setup within the Kawarau Gorge/Cromwell area. Not exactly exciting to look at, but it did make for an interesting wee pit stop.
Wanaka is another small town that sits at the foot of a very large lake, (Lake Wanaka), surrounded by mountains. It’s like a mini Queenstown, as it seems to be geared towards activities within the mountains and lakes, judging by the number of outdoor clothing, mountain biking, and ski shops we saw.
Still, it’s a lovely wee place to stop off in and watch the world go by …
Next stop – Mount Cook.
